Overcoming Setbacks: Pursue with Determination

Isaiah 40:28-31, states; Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

The enemy does not give up in his opposition to our progress. He does not give up after one setback. He keeps on countering whatever the Lord’s people try to do to move ahead. If he can get you to kick back and give up, he has achieved his objective.

Your past experiences, disadvantages, and adverse circumstances, can either limit and stop you or it can be the fuel that you need to push you forward. God is sovereign and powerful and is able to push you past circumstances, limitations, impossibilities, closed doors, malicious people, and even above Satan.

Don’t be discouraged by the process, God is able to use the negative, working it to your good. Think of Joseph, the man who later told his brothers, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good (Genesis 50:20).”

We can now read the story and repeat that wonderful saying, but imagine yourself in his shoes. You get sold as a slave, and was stripped of all your human dignity. All the lovely dreams of royalty vanished, your childhood robe, family bond, and anything else you would want to live for.
Joseph was not a superior man or had some special gift, but what he had was a determination to continue trusting in God. He was as frail as any of us. And he had no Bible to read about the faithfulness of God. But he knew his life would be better if he stayed faithful to God. Through God all things are possible, bearable, and can be overcome! There is no sickness, pain or diagnosis that comes upon us that God cannot sustain us through.
